The possibility for the Renzo Barbera stadium to be one of the venues for Euro 2032, through the planning of redevelopment and modernisation activities, was the focus of a meeting held this morning at Villa Niscemi, where mayor Roberto Lagalla received the official UEFA representative to the Euro 2032 Organising Committee, Michele Uva, together with Antonio Talarico and Giovanni Spitaleri, representing FIGC president Gabriele Gravina.
The meeting was also attended by the president of the City Council, Giulio Tantillo, the councillors for the Budget and Sport, Brigida Alaimo and Alessandro Anello, and the president and CEO of Palermo, Dario Mirri and Giovanni Gardini.
The mayor emphasised that the meeting “served to define with the FIGC the road map of steps to be completed between now and a year from now”.
“To the representatives of UEFA and FIGC – said Lagalla – we reaffirmed the commitment of the municipality, in collaboration with Palermo FC, to present a feasibility study for the redevelopment and modernisation of the Renzo Barbera stadium, accompanied by the necessary authorisations within the deadline set by UEFA, i.e. July 2026. During the meeting, it was also confirmed that the municipal administration, the municipal council presidency and Palermo Football Club are willing to proceed with the renewal of the stadium concession on the basis of a multi-year agreement, subject to the presentation of the feasibility study by the Rosanero club in the coming months”.
“The synergy between the municipal administration and Palermo FC and the path we have embarked upon together – concluded the mayor of the Sicilian capital – are the driving force behind our efforts to provide the city and its fans with a more modern and comfortable stadium, which remains our main objective. Added to this is the awareness that Palermo’s possible inclusion among the five host cities for Euro 2032 could represent a further boost to the Barbera’s regeneration plan“.
“This meeting – said Giovanni Gardini – confirms the importance of a shared path to achieve everyone’s goal: to position Palermo as a reference point in Italy for football, through a state-of-the-art stadium where the people of Palermo and visitors from all over the world can feel welcome and where people’s passion can be defended, celebrated and honoured. Euro 2032 is an unmissable opportunity to immediately give substance to these objectives. For this reason, we reiterate our willingness to commit all our energies, confident that the whole city will row in the same direction”.
